June 2008  Flooding - update

Main Street Main Street

In early June 2007, Roos was subject to severe flooding. The majority of residents have now returned to their homes following repair to their properties. Unfortunately, some are still waiting and living in temporary accommodation.

Since that time, much remedial work has been undertaken by the East Riding of Yorkshire Council, Roos Parish Council and Yorkshire Water.

Roos Beck has been  fully surveyed, some new filter grilles have been fitted and a schedule instituted for its regular inspection and maintenance.

Plans are being prepared to construct a storm water overflow to the south of the village. This will alleviate any future back up of water in times of exceptional rainfall.

A Parish Community Emergency Preparedness Plan has been developed.

It aims to provide immediate support for local residents, homes, properties and businesses in the event of a major emergency arising. It identifies the location of physical resources and individuals with appropriate expertise to implement the Plan.

It explains:

  • Who triggers implementation of the Plan?
  • When the Plan is to be initiated
  • Why is the Plan triggered?
  • What action is to taken following initiation of the Plan?
  • How is the Plan implemented?

Further detailed information is available on the Humber Emergency Planning  Service website www.heps.gov.uk.

Independant Survey.

In late 2007, a professional drainage engineer was commissioned to undertake a full and widespread investigation into all the contributory factors leading to the flooding, and to  make recommendations to minimise the likelihood of any such circumstances arising in the future. A copy of his report is available - see downloads.
